The  CGMA®  (Chartered Global Management Accountant) professional qualification was established by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants® (CIMA), UK. It validates technical accounting skills and develops a comprehensive set of business skills required for managerial decision-making. Holding the CGMA status confirms that the credential holder possesses a business partner mindset, is capable of making data-driven decisions, and understands business development strategy.

The CGMA Professional Qualification (PQ) program consists of three levels. At each level, candidates must pass 3 objective tests and 1 integrated case study exam.

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) was established in the UK in 1919 as The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants. In 1975, it was granted a Royal Charter for its exceptional standards in training financial professionals and was vested with the authority to oversee the implementation of state standards in management accounting (the name Chartered Institute of Management Accountants was adopted in 1986).

In 2017, the CIMA Institute formed a joint venture with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA, USA). Currently, both institutes operate under the unified brand AICPA & CIMA. The primary objective of this alliance is to pool resources to advance management accounting globally. Today, the Association unites approximately 696,000 professionals (AICPA and CIMA members, students, and professionals) across 192 countries, of which nearly 90,000 individuals hold the prestigious CGMA® designation.
